From a young age I have always been involved in sports. Although I loved every moment of it, I was always trying to look the part and to seek approval from those around me. I never completely accepted myself for who I was and always wanted to be better.
“When you please others in hopes of being accepted, you lose you self-worth in the process.” -Dave Pelzer
In every class I took at school and every sports or hobby I took on, I was always striving for the ultimate perfection. I went through many years of battling my inner demons and as a result I became a woman who looked in the mirror and saw only what the judgments of others could see, the biggest critic being myself. I did not see the warmth and kindness that my friends saw. I did not see the bright smile that so many mentioned. All I could see was the negatives, the insults, and the flaws.
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
When I met my husband Mark, I discovered a man who was always speaking highly of me and yet his compliments all too often embarrassed me. It was not because they were embarrassing, but instead because I felt like I did not deserve them.
After the birth of our first child, I found I was torn between love of my beautiful child and a dislike for myself. I compared myself to what I used to be. My body became something that I covered up and the camera something I avoided.
“A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.” – Mark Twain
After the birth of our second child, my weight escalated to 219 lbs. I was in love with my children and depressed with myself. It resulted in moments of complete joy and complete sadness, all at the same time. I came to the conclusion that this was the best I was going to be. No matter how many different skills I had, or how many achievements I gained, my goals for fitness and health would never be achieved.
“You have been criticizing yourself for years, and it hasn’t worked. Try approving of yourself and see what happens.
– Louise L. Hay
My depressing spiral downward ended with a terrible car accident that forced me to realize the precious moments I was wasting away.
Over the next few years, I was able to bring my weight down a little but nowhere near a healthy weight. I tried every diet there was out there and some worked initially, but when I went back to “real life eating”, all the weight would come back on.
It was not until I discovered Venice Nutrition that I truly learned how to eat real food without the fear of food. I started to gain some control back and although it was difficult at first to see the positive results, eventually I did. The moments of happiness and love started to wash away the moments of self-judgment.
“Only when you are aware of the uniqueness of everyone’s individual body will you begin to have a sense of your own self-worth.” -Ma Jian
I now have the tools to understand food and I understand that it is not something to fear but rather something to embrace. By feeling healthier, I now choose to feel inspired about myself. I have started to like myself for who I am and in turn, have more love to give my beautiful children, my loving husband, and my wonderful family and friends.
During the 8 week run I was able to easily lose 24 lbs but more importantly, I took back control of my life. I was a sad, tired, and stressed out mom. Now I have my life by the horns and look forward to choosing my path.
“There is nothing noble about being superior to some other man. The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self.” – Hindu Proverb
The battle does not completely disappear, I simply am stronger than my apprehensions and I choose to see the beauty in myself. I am perfectly imperfect…. and I now choose to love who I am through my own eyes. It is my goal to share this toolbox of discovery and development with as many women as I can. I want them to know how to take back control, that it is never too late, and there is no mountain too high to climb.
Join me on this journey of self-discovery, and find out just how amazing you are inside and out!
